One Year of Times transforms an entire year of The New York Times into the form of a tree trunk. Created by meticulously layering, gluing, and sculpting thousands of newspaper pages, the work converts a medium designed for rapid circulation and immediate consumption into a slow, monumental object that recalls the growth patterns of a tree.
The sculpture reflects on the relationship between the accelerated rhythms of contemporary information and the deep temporal cycles of the natural world. Each page, once carrying daily accounts of political events, social changes, and human experiences, becomes a material layer within a new structure—an accumulation of time, memory, and collective experience.
As part of the ongoing Petrified Times series, the work explores the transformation of printed media into forms that evoke natural processes of growth, erosion, sedimentation, and fossilization. The newspaper, a symbol of passing moments, is reimagined as a vessel of permanence, resembling tree rings that preserve traces of a tree’s history.
By returning the newspaper to the shape of its original source material—the tree—One Year of Times creates a poetic connection between human communication and ecological time. It invites reflection on how information is preserved, forgotten, and absorbed into collective memory, suggesting that even the most fleeting moments of history can leave lasting layers behind.
